h2. 摘要（Abstract）

Maka 是一个 local-first AI agent runtime 和 workspace。它使用 append-only log 记录 model message、tool call、tool result、permission decision 和 termination event。Session、model context、durable task 和 recovery 均从这些 log 中派生，因此，中断或长时间运行的 agent 工作可以被检查、replay、resume 和评估。

h2. 项目说明（Proposal）

Maka 提供一个由 Runtime Host 统一拥有的 execution runtime，供 desktop application、terminal TUI、non-interactive CLI 和 Eval client 共同使用。其设计将持久化的 execution fact 与临时发送给 model 的 context 分离。

Maka 提供以下能力：

* *Append-only execution record。* Model message、tool call、tool result、permission decision 和 termination event 会先持久化，再被投影为面向用户的状态。
* *可重建的状态。* Session、active context、UI state 和 recovery decision 均从 event log 派生，而不是分别维护为彼此独立的事实来源。
* *不删除历史记录的 context management。* Tool-result pruning 和 LLM compaction 可以减少下一次 inference 使用的 context，同时完整保留原始 execution record。
* *跨越单个 turn 的 durable work。* Runtime Host 为每个 Session 和 Turn 提供独立的 identity、event log、permission pause、continuation 和 resume 行为。
* *基于证据的完成判定。* Runtime 会将 model 声称“工作已完成”与经过验证的 process 和 tool outcome 分开记录。
* *一个 runtime，多种使用界面。* Maka 提供 Electron desktop application、terminal TUI、non-interactive CLI，以及只通过 Runtime Host 执行 Maka subject 的 Eval client。

Maka 主要使用 TypeScript 编写，运行于 Node.js。默认情况下，session、setting、credential 和 run record 都保留在用户本地设备上。

h2. 背景（Background）

AI agent 将 LLM 与 tool、permission、persistent state 和 control loop 组合在一起。随着 task 运行时间变长，外围 runtime 必须处理 tool 部分执行、context limit、process interruption、permission boundary 和 recovery。Maka 专注于这一 runtime layer。公开 GitHub 项目创建于 2026-05-27，此后一直通过公开 issue 和 pull request 进行开发。

h2. 理由（Rationale）

许多 agent application 只保存最终 conversation，却没有保存生成该结果的完整 execution process。这使得中断后的工作难以恢复，也使 tool behavior 难以 audit 或评估。Maka 将 execution history 视为持久化证据，并使用这些证据重建状态和恢复工作。

ASF 能够提供中立所有权、公开决策、meritocratic community growth 和长期治理。对于一个希望支持由不同组织维护的 integration 和 product 的 agent runtime，这些特性十分重要。

h2. 初始目标（Initial Goals）

* 将 codebase 转移至 ASF，并完成项目名称、provenance、license 和 IP clearance。
* 在公开 mailing list 上进行技术和治理决策。
* 基于持续、可 review 的贡献，明确 contributor 成长为 committer 的路径。
* 扩大 runtime、desktop、integration、documentation 和 release engineering 等领域的共同所有权。
* 发布符合 Apache 要求的 source release，并建立可重复执行的 release process。
* 在不绑定单一 model vendor 或 commercial sponsor 的前提下扩大项目采用。

h2. 当前状态（Current Status）

h3. Meritocracy

开发通过公开 issue 和 pull request 进行。贡献根据技术价值接受 review，持续贡献者已经开始负责 runtime、desktop、computer-use、provider 和 documentation 等工作。在 incubation 期间，项目将通过书面的 committer 标准和公开讨论，使这一成长路径更加明确。

截至 2026-08-03，repository 拥有 1,104 个 GitHub stars、123 个 forks 和 40 位 contributors。在此前 30 天内，共有 34 位 authors 提交 commit。目前协作主要通过 GitHub issue 和 pull request 进行；进入 incubation 后，项目级决策将迁移至公开 development mailing list。

h3. Core Developers

* *Jie Wen（jackwener）* — 项目发起人，负责 runtime architecture 和 distributed-systems design。他是 Apache Arrow、Apache DataFusion 和 Apache Doris 的 PMC member 与 committer。
* *Yuhan Lei（Astro-Han）* — 负责 runtime、evaluation、benchmarking 和 desktop development，同时也是 OpenCLI contributor。
* *Kun Li（likun666661）* — 负责 runtime event-log architecture、execution lifecycle 和 completion verification。

其他 module owners 和持续贡献者包括 Haoqing Wang（hqhq1025，computer-use）、Zhanghan Gao（YayoiNanoka）、sunheyi6、Nyvo-io、Yongtao Wang（M4n5ter）、Colafornia、GabrielDrapor、MicroGery、zhiiw 等。

h3. Alignment

Maka 旨在成为位于 model provider 与 end-user application 之间的 vendor-neutral runtime。ASF governance 可以确保其 interface、execution record 和 extension point 不受任何单一 vendor 控制。项目也与 ASF data 和 infrastructure 项目具有共同的工程关注点，包括 append-only log、projection、durable state 和 reproducible execution。

h2. 已知风险（Known Risks）

h3. 项目名称（Project Name）

初步 web 和 repository 搜索发现了若干与“Maka”同名但无关的项目，包括一家中国设计营销服务商和几个小型 open-source project。目前未发现它们提供相同的面向开发者的 AI agent runtime，但初步搜索不能替代 ASF name review。Podling 将在 incubation 期间完成 {{PODLINGNAMESEARCH}}；如果 ASF policy 要求更名，项目将进行更名。

h3. 项目被遗弃的风险（Orphan Products）

项目仍然年轻，尚未证明长期持续性。当前已有多位活跃 maintainer 和 contributor 分别负责 runtime、desktop、Eval 和 computer-use component，这在一定程度上降低了风险。Incubation 期间将重点记录这些 ownership boundary、增加 committer，并让 release knowledge 在社区内共享，而不是依赖某一个人。

h3. Open Source 经验不足（Inexperience with Open Source）

一位 initial committer 是 Apache Arrow、Apache DataFusion 和 Apache Doris 的 PMC member 与 committer，其他多位开发者也拥有 open-source contribution 经验。不过，大多数拟议社区成员尚未实际负责过 Apache release，也没有在 ASF mailing list 上开展过项目治理。Mentor 将帮助 podling 建立 release、voting、IP 和 community practice，并将这些实践文档化，避免它们依赖单个有经验的 committer。

h3. Incubation 周期（Length of Incubation）

项目没有固定的 graduation deadline。初步预计大约需要两年，但最终 graduation 将取决于是否形成可持续且多元的 committer base、公开治理、共享的 release ownership，以及是否完成多次符合 Apache 要求的 release。

h3. 开发者同质化（Homogenous Developers）

Initial committers 当前存在重叠的社交和职业关系网络，许多实时协作也使用中文。不过，他们来自多个 employer、一所大学和 independent contributor。项目将在公开 development mailing list 上使用英文进行决策和 voting，完善英文 documentation，并从现有关系网络之外招募 contributor。

h3. 对受薪开发者的依赖（Reliance on Salaried Developers）

Initial committers 来自多个 employer、一所大学和 individual contributor，并非全部由同一个组织付费。不过，受薪工作仍可能影响部分 contributor 的时间投入方向。Podling 将持续关注 affiliation diversity 并扩大 committer base，避免开发和 release 依赖某一个 employer 或少数成员。

h3. 与其他 Apache 项目的关系（Relationships with Other Apache Products）

Maka 不与现有 ASF product 重复。它工作在 AI agent runtime layer，同时与 Apache data 和 infrastructure 项目共享 append-only log、projection 和 durable state 等概念。未来的 integration 可以将 ASF storage、data-processing 和 observability system 暴露为 tool 或 backend，但 incubation 并不依赖这些 integration。

h3. 对 Apache Brand 的过度迷恋（An Excessive Fascination with the Apache Brand）

项目寻求的是中立治理、公开决策、meritocratic committer model 和长期维护。初始目标关注 community 和 release practice，而不是借助 Apache 名称进行推广。

h2. Source 与 Intellectual Property 提交计划（Source and Intellectual Property Submission Plan）

现有源代码采用 Apache License, Version 2.0。在 code transfer 之前或过程中，podling 将：

* 获取所有 initial committer 的 ICLA，并与 Incubator PMC 确认相关代码是否需要 Software Grant 或 CCLA。
* 验证初始 codebase 的 provenance，并识别由 contributor 或其 employer 拥有的代码。
* 按照 ASF policy 调整 source header、{{LICENSE}} 和 {{NOTICE}} 文件。
* 删除、替换无法贡献给 ASF 的代码或 asset，或者重新获得适当 license。
* 在第一个 Apache release 前，重新执行 dependency license audit 和 assembled-artifact license audit。

h3. 外部依赖（External Dependencies）

Maka 是一个 TypeScript monorepo。Runtime 的大部分功能由 Maka 自己的 workspace package 实现；repository 当前包含 *33 个直接 third-party production dependencies*。完整 transitive closure 更大，每次 release 都会根据 {{package-lock.json}} 自动生成，而不是在本 proposal 中手工维护。

这些依赖分为五类：

* *Runtime 和 user interface。* Node.js（当前要求 22.19 或更高版本）运行共享 Runtime Host、CLI 和 Eval client。Electron/Chromium 承载 desktop application；React 和 Astryx 提供 desktop UI；{{@earendil-works/pi-tui}} 提供 terminal TUI。CLI 和 Eval client 不需要 Electron 或 React。
* *Model access。* 采用 Apache-2.0 license 的 Vercel {{ai}} SDK，以及 Anthropic、Cohere、Google、OpenAI 和 OpenAI-compatible adapter，用于统一不同 model provider protocol。Maka 不依赖特定 commercial model service，也不需要 Maka 自己运营的 control plane。用户既可以配置 remote provider，也可以配置本地 compatible endpoint；credential 保存在本地，不属于 release 内容。
* *Agent protocol 和本地执行。* {{@modelcontextprotocol/sdk}} 用于实现 MCP interoperability；{{node-pty}} 和 headless xterm package 提供 interactive shell session 与 terminal emulation；{{fs-native-extensions}} 提供跨 process file locking；{{@jackwener/opencli}} 通过 CDP 提供 browser automation。{{undici}}、{{ws}}、{{yaml}} 和 {{zod}} 等较小 library 用于 networking、configuration 和 validation。
* *可选 integration。* Slack、Lark/Feishu 和 WeCom SDK 只在用户启用对应 bot channel 时使用。这些 service 是可选 integration，并不是 build 或启动 Maka 所必需的 infrastructure。
* *Build 和 test tooling。* TypeScript、esbuild、Vite、Electron Builder、Playwright、Storybook 和 Tailwind CSS 用于 build 和 test；Biome 用于 linting 和 formatting。这些 tool 不会被 CLI 或 Runtime Host 加载。进入 binary release 的 build output 将接受下文所述的 release audit。

h4. License 和 Release 处理（License and Release Treatment）

2026-08-03，我们在 clean checkout 中执行 {{npm ci}} 后重新生成并验证了 dependency inventory。结果与 checked-in 文件一致，共记录 *239 个 production npm packages*：180 个 MIT、21 个 Apache-2.0、19 个 ISC、15 个 BSD-3-Clause、2 个 BSD-2-Clause、1 个 Python-2.0 和 1 个 BlueOak-1.0.0。这些均为 ASF Category A license，该 inventory 中*没有发现 Category X dependency*。

{{scripts/generate-third-party-notices.mjs}} 负责强制执行这套 inventory。该脚本遍历准确的 desktop production closure，拒绝缺失或未批准的 license metadata，为 dual-licensed package 记录选定 license，并生成随 {{THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.txt}} 一起发布的完整 license text。Source distribution 不会 vendor {{node_modules}}。Binary distribution 会分别为 npm closure、Electron/Chromium、font 和 icon asset 携带 notice。

*仅用于构建的依赖*

{{lightningcss}}（MPL-2.0）和 {{caniuse-lite}}（CC-BY-4.0）只用于构建 desktop application，不会作为 Maka 的组成部分重新分发。

*macOS 可选依赖*

macOS 的 computer-use 可选功能使用 {{cua-driver}}，它基于采用 MIT license 的 {{trycua/cua}} 项目。{{cua-driver}} executable 及其 Rust crates 均不包含在 Maka 的 source distribution 或 binary distribution 中。Apache release 固定关闭这个 backend，因此 {{cua-driver}} 不属于上面的 release dependency inventory。

h3. Cryptography

Maka 并不是以 cryptography 为主要功能的产品；它使用标准 TLS/HTTPS library 与 model provider 通信，并使用标准 hashing 处理 content-addressed artifact。如果任何 bundled cryptographic functionality 触发 ASF export-notification（ECCN）要求，我们会通知 ASF 并完成所需手续。
