title: "Stewardship"
description: "The promises behind OpenWork's open-core split: what stays open, what can move between tiers, and how the MIT conversion works."
---
OpenWork is an open-core product: the desktop app and core platform are MIT,
and the `ee/` directory (OpenWork Den, the org control plane) is
source-available under the
[OpenWork EE License](https://github.com/different-ai/openwork/blob/dev/ee/LICENSE).
That split only works if you can trust how we steward it, so we make these
promises in public.
## Our promises
1. **The MIT core stays MIT.** We do not relicense code that has shipped under
MIT. Features do not move from the MIT core into `ee/` retroactively — a
feature you already have under MIT is yours under MIT.
2. **Released versions keep their license.** Every release is governed by the
license text it shipped with. License changes apply to future releases
only, never to code you already deployed.
3. **Every EE release becomes MIT after two years.** The EE License contains
an irrevocable grant: each version of the `ee/` code converts to MIT on
the second anniversary of its public release. The grant is written into
the license itself and requires no future action or approval from us —
your long-term rights to the software never depend on anyone's roadmap,
including ours.
4. **The free grants are floor commitments.** Free production use for
organizations of up to 5 users (core features), free 30-day evaluation at
any scale with all features (extendable in writing), and free development
and testing use are commitments we intend to keep. If the boundaries ever
change, the change applies to future releases only (see promise 2).
5. **Paid tiers do not shrink mid-term.** If we move a capability between
tiers, the change is prospective and never removes a feature from your
current paid plan during a paid term.
6. **The enterprise source stays readable.** We publish the `ee/` source so
security teams can audit exactly what they deploy, before they deploy it.
## Trademarks and white-labeling
The OpenWork name, logo, and product names are trademarks of Different AI,
Inc. The EE License and MIT license grant rights to the *code*, not the
brand:
- **Allowed without permission:** factually identifying that you use or built
on OpenWork ("powered by OpenWork", "built with OpenWork"), unmodified use
of the app with its own branding, and nominative references in
documentation, reviews, and talks.
- **Requires an Enterprise plan (internal white-labeling):** replacing OpenWork
product names, logos, or accent branding with your own inside the deployed
product — for example a custom app name, logo, or brand color for your
organization's workspace.
- **Requires a separate written agreement (external resale):** distributing,
operating as a managed service, or reselling a white-labeled deployment to
third parties under your branding.
- **Never allowed:** implying that Different AI, Inc. endorses your product
or service, using the marks in a confusingly similar product name, or
removing copyright and license notices from the source.
